This arrived in the mail the other day from a friend who lives in the mountains of North Carolina.

LET me always turn my back on security. For it is the fearful uncertainty of my life that gives me strength.

A job is not a life no matter how noble the cause. It is merely death’s most successful trap. Nature’s way with man of weeding out the weak and lame.

The white man lost his life in ages past when civilization came to mean the ultimate good. Sad to say, it never has. History rebukes me with dismal tales of wars and deaths and lives judged better than my own — all leading up to these maddening dank coffins called careers and money, importance and power.

I will not fall prey to these damnable traps, set to lure me from the rivers and mountains and sky, all those things that truly flow through me and give me life.
