Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author best known for his widely adapted fairy tales, including “The Little Mermaid,” “The Ugly Duckling,” and “Thumbelina.” As a boy, after seeing King Frederick VI of Denmark, he declared, “Oh, he’s nothing more than a human being!” Andersen died in 1875.

Al Kesselheim moved to Montana in 1982 to make the leap into the abyss of freelance writing. He has been slowly climbing out ever since. He is now the author of eleven books, including Let Them Paddle: Coming of Age on the Water and Montana: Real Place, Real People.

Danusha Laméris has worked as a writing teacher, clothing seller, and clairvoyant. Her poetry collection The Moons of August is the winner of the Autumn House Press Poetry Prize. She lives in Santa Cruz, California, where she is working on a new book of poems.

Nancy Matson lives in Los Angeles, California, with a chinchilla for a housemate. She has held more than seventy jobs and has written essays about a number of them. She is obsessed with wastefulness and maintains a website that gives directions for properly disposing of unwanted items.

Dion O’Reilly has spent much of her life in the company of cows, horses, pigs, goats, a baleful Amazonian parrot, and many enormous dogs. As a child she would nap with her favorite pig and is infamous in her family for refusing to leave the pigpen to kiss her grandmother goodbye. She lives in Soquel, California.

Leslye Hutto was a photographer who lived in rural Wyoming. The wife of this month’s interview subject, Joe Hutto, she died in 2014.

Nolan Calisch is an artist and organic farmer who lives in Portland, Oregon. He took this month’s cover photograph, of a doe at the edge of the forest, when he was an artist-in-residence at Fort Worden State Park on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State.
