In celebration of The Sun’s fiftieth year of publication, we’ll be at the Mission Creek Festival, a music and literature festival in Iowa City, Iowa. Festivities begin Thursday, April 6, and conclude Saturday, April 8. We hope you’ll join us at one — or all — of The Sun’s free events on Saturday. Details below.
The Small Press & Literary Magazine Bookfair at the Chauncey
April 8, 11 AM–5 PM
Stop by for books, conversation, and community. Sun staff will be offering free copies of the magazine.
Readers Write Workshop at the Tuesday Agency (fourth floor of the Chauncey)
April 8, 12:30 PM–1:30 PM
In this hour-long workshop hosted by Sun associate editor Derek Askey, participants will learn about The Sun’s Readers Write section and draft entries for forthcoming, not-yet-announced topics. As time permits, participants will share work in an open, supportive environment, and have the opportunity to ask questions about submitting writing or the editing/selection process at The Sun.
The workshop is free and open to the public but space is limited. Therefore, we ask that participants register in advance. Click here to register. Attendees will receive a free yearlong subscription to The Sun.
Capstone Reading & Afterparty at the James Theater
April 8, 7 PM–8 PM
The capstone reading will feature magazine contributors Joe Wilkins, Michael Torres, Rachel Yoder, and Zoë Bossiere alongside poet Camonghne Felix. Attendees are invited to stay for an afterparty in celebration of The Sun’s fiftieth year of publication. There will be light refreshments and drinks available. This event is free and open to the public.
The Mission Creek Festival is annually produced by the Englert Theatre — a registered 501(c)(3) — and is an essential aspect of their arts programming and community outreach. We’re happy to partner with them this year in celebration of our fiftieth year of publication. If you’d like to support the festival with a donation, click here.
We’ll mail you a free copy of this month’s issue. Plus you’ll get full online access—including more than 50 years of archives.
