Alice Walker is a writer and activist. She’s best known for her 1982 novel, The Color Purple. The novel won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, making her the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer for fiction. It was adapted into a critically acclaimed 1985 film and a 2005 Broadway musical by the same name.
