Henri J.M. Nouwen was a Catholic priest, a professor, and the author of more than forty books on spirituality. He spent the last ten years of his life caring for people with mental and physical disabilities at L’Arche Daybreak community in Ontario, Canada. He died in 1996.
The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not-knowing, not-curing, not-healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness — that is the friend who cares.
